Inizio anno accademico 2020-21

Il messaggio del Rettore Francesco Frati

Ascolta l'intervento.

Buon Anno Accademico a tutte e a tutti.

Rettore dell’Università di Siena

Academic year 2020-21. The message of the Rector Francesco Frati

Dear students of the University of Siena,

with the approach of the beginning of the teaching activities of the next academic year, I would like to remind you that the University has prepared itself in the best possible way to welcome all its students back into the university classrooms in compliance with strict security measures.

I therefore announce that all the classes of the first semester of the 2020/21 academic year will be held in presence in the teaching centers of the University or in other spaces made available thanks to the collaboration of other institutions, in compliance with the correct physical distancing and implementing any other measure of security to counteract the spread of the covid-19 pandemic.

We made this organizational effort because we are convinced that the university experience can be said to be complete only if it is lived through the sharing of spaces, opinions, glances and emotions.
And, equally convinced that this also represents the desire of our students, we are committed to making it possible.

If the implementation of tools and measures to contain the pandemic will guarantee students and students to attend the university spaces safely, we are also aware that these measures are not effective without the sense of responsibility of each of us - teachers, personnel, students - in adopting behavioral measures and implementing correct daily habits that represent the best insurance against the spread of the infection:

  • use of your face-mask,
  • frequent washing and sanitizing of hands,
  • maintaining physical distance avoiding gatherings,
  • rigorous self-monitoring of any symptoms of the disease.

Correct habits and correct behaviors will be the best tools to safeguard our health and to respect the health of others.

Among the measures necessary to safeguard collective health is contact tracing. For this reason, the Ministry invited students and staff to equip themselves with the IMMUNI app so as to make it possible to quickly identify the subjects to be protected in the event of positive cases.
For the same reason, and to allow those who will have to follow the courses in remote to obtain access credentials, it will be necessary to have a precise list of students enrolled in each course.

Therefore, even if the final date for enrollment is set for November 2 (and December 21 for master's degrees), I suggest you all to regularize your enrollment before the beginning of the courses, so as to allow the offices to have a updated picture of the situation.

In addition to in-presence teaching, which continues to be the preferred method, every single lesson will be simultaneously transmitted in distance learning and/or videotaped so as to be made available on our digital platform and, if necessary, viewed later. This mode is essential for students who cannot physically be present in our locations.
At a time when there are legitimate concerns about the possibility that any economic difficulties may discourage many students from enrolling or continuing their university career, I would like to reiterate that education continues to represent the best investment in yourself.

To allow you to achieve this goal, we have implemented a series of measures that serve tofacilitate your presence at the University of Siena: the university fee for students coming from lower income families has been eliminated or considerably reduced; the solidarity fund was increased tenfold to better respond to emergency situations; economic concessions have been allocated for the purchase of digital tools, such as computers and tablets, or services to facilitate access to the network, such as wifi modem with integrated SIM card or reimbursement of home ADSL.

More information can be found on the university portal in the section ORIENTARSI, where deadlines and methods for submitting applications are indicated.
The preliminary data available on enrollments show that these opportunities have been appreciated and we hope that they will be useful to allow everyone to access university education in our University.

If there is one lesson that we have learned from this cruel pandemic, it is that research, knowledge and education are the best ingredients for counteracting emergencies like this, as well as other emergencies that will cross our social communities in the future.

Let me close this greetings message by reminding you that studying at the University of Siena means attending a prestigious university with a great tradition; it means doing it, in this very complicated situation, in conditions of maximum safety; it means having the opportunity to meet other students, to discuss with professors and to attend university spaces that will enrich your training; finally, it means living in a territory which, due to its environmental characteristics and its immense historical and artistic heritage, represents an extraordinary place where one can complete his/her university experience.

An experience - I’m sure - that will be unforgettable and that will remain in your eyes and mind for the rest of your life.
I wish you all a pleasant Academic Year

Francesco Frati

Rector of the University of Siena
