Andrea Garzelli obtained the "Laurea" degree (summa cum laude) in Electronic Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Florence, Italy, in 1991 and 1995, respectively. In 1995 he joined the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Siena (now DIISM) as an Assistant Professor. Since 2001, he has been Associate Professor of Telecommunications at the same Department, where he holds the courses of "Statistical Signal Processing", "Telecommunication Systems", and "Remote Sensing Laboratory".
He was awarded with research accreditations as Full Professor in April 2017. He is the coordinator of the "Presidio di Qualità dell'Ateneo" which organizes the Quality Assurance activities of the University of Siena. From 2002 to 2009 he has been Program Coordinator of both graduate and post-graduate courses in Telecommunication Engineering at the University of Siena.
His research interests are in signal and image analysis, processing, and communication: nonlinear filtering, SAR image analysis, and image fusion for optical and SAR remote sensing applications. He has been involved, both as participant and responsible, in a number of national and international research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of University (MIUR), the Italian Space Agency (ASI), the National Research Council (CNR), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the European Commission.
He is author of about 200 scientific publications, including peer-reviewed journals, a monograph, book chapters and conference proceedings. He has been serving as an Associate Editor for the journal IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing since 2015. Dr. Garzelli is a Member of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society - Image Analysis and Data Fusion Committee. He regularly serves as a reviewer for several international scientific journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, Remote Sensing of Environment.
He is the 2004 recipient, with his co-authors, of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Letters Prize Paper Award for the paper "A Global Quality Measurement of Pan-Sharpened Multispectral Imagery". On January 2006, he has been elected Senior Member of the IEEE. The book “Remote Sensing Image Fusion” (CRC Press) has been awarded by the Information Research Foundation (IRF) with the Outstanding IRF Book publication award for 2014-2015. He was a recipient of the recognition of Best Reviewers of the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing in 2014.
