The focus of the course is on English in business communications and the language of economics and finance. With the aim of improving fluency and confidence in personal communication, we will do listening practice including TED talks on aspects of work life and careers, colloquial language and professional communications, as well as audio of realistic business situations such as meetings, interviews and presentations, hearing a variety of accents from the international panorama of spoken English. Students will be encouraged to participate in speaking/discussion activities, in particular with classmates from other countries, to focus on pronunciation and clarity in an international, multi-accent environment. To build vocabulary, we will also work on financial language specifically – the language of banking and central banks, finance, currency and balance sheets -, as well as business idioms. Elements of grammar that are the source of the most common errors will be reviewed. Additionally, there is a strong focus on writing, both business/professional writing such as emails, report and presentations, and academic writing, including descriptions of graphs/trends and paraphrasing techniques essential for writing papers and theses. We will conclude with sections offering detailed information on CV and cover letter writing and job interviewing in English.
