This course aims to familiarize students with fundamental experimental techinques used in linguistic research.
Upon successful completion of this course,
the students will be able:
To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main principles of experimental research in the domain of linguistics;
To convert research questions into testable hypotheses and to operationalize variables;
To design, implement, and conduct simple experiments (rating tasks,
(two-alternative) forced choice tasks, reaction times/self-paced reading);
To understand, review and evaluate research papers
The course is characterized by a hands-on approach and a laboratory component. The students will learn how to code simple experiments on different experimental software platforms (web-based and in praesentia): IbexFarm, OpenSesame (and - possibly - PsychoPy). For this reason, attendance in lectures is strongly recommended.
