The Adventures of Prince Achmed,
a silhouette film, created and directed by Lotte Reiniger, in Berlin in l923-26. Taking off from the Arabian Nights, and weaving together several stories from the book, including The Magic HOrse, Prince Achmed and Fairy Peri Banou, and Aladdin, Reiniger made the first full-length animated film using only shadow puppets she cut out herself with nail scissors, differently coloured transparencies and lighting effects. The result is a masterpiece of illusion, storytelling, and cinematic spectacle.
