Recognized researchers - Research fellows

A research fellowship (assegno di ricerca) is a contract awarded through a public selection, based on the applicant’s qualifications and interview. Post-doc appointments correspond in Italy to the research fellow position. 

 

The research fellow (assegnista di ricerca) is a young scholars holding  a Master’s degree and/or PhD with a scientific and professional background suitable to carry out research projects financed by the University. 

Research fellowships are established by art. 22 of Law 240/2010 and are subject to University of Siena Regulations.

 

Researchers who have been selected or identified by bodies or organizations outside the University, within the framework of European or international research projects, may be exempted from the selection procedure for the awarding of research grants.

If the research fellow is a non-EU citizen, in order to enter Italy and carry out research activities, he/she must hold a visa for scientific research.

 
Established Researcher (Temporary researchers - ricercatori a tempo determinato)

Temporary researchers are recruited by a public call. Application must be submitted online thought the PICA Platform.

There are two types of contracts

  • a fixed-term type A (RTDA) which is a three-year subordinated contract that can be extended for an additional two years
  • a fixed-term type B (RTDB), which is a three-year subordinate contract that cannot be extended, but in a tenure track. Type B researchers can become associate professors (with permanent contracts) if during the three years they have obtained the National Scientific Qualification from associate professor (or full  professor) and if upon the expiration of the contract they receive the approval of the department  in which they work in.

 

If the researcher is a non-EU citizen, in order to enter Italy and carry out research activities, he/she must hold a visa for scientific research

Leading Researchers (associate and full professors)

University professors (professori associati e ordinari) are recruited through a public competition; they carry out research and teaching activities and they hold a permanent position.

 

 

  • associate professor (or second level)
  • full professor (or first level). The functions of Rector, Director of the Department, as well as the functions of coordination of research doctorate courses and coordination between research groups are reserved for first level professors.

If an associate/full professor is a non-EU citizen, in order to enter Italy and carry out teaching and research activities, he/she must hold an employment visa.
