What is the "New Magnetometer" project

Aims of the project
The aim of this project is to carry out theoretical and experimental research to explore the potential of the Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) effect for precise magnetic field (MF) and electromagnetic field (EMF) measurements.
We will develop an experimental set-up and methodology for precise magnetic field measurements using the CPT effect in alkali atoms.
Such an approach should make it possible to build a simpler, portable, all-optical device with high accuracy and high spatial resolution, which works at room temperature. This device could be used in, amongst other areas, the field of human health care and in the monitoring and standardisation of working conditions.

Part of the E.U. 5th Framework Programme
The "New Magnetometer" project is funded under the European Union's "GROWTH" programme, conceived to help solve problems and to respond to the major socio-economic challenges facing Europe, which has the aim of increasing economic growth and creating new jobs in Europe, by sustaining the innovation effort of European industry towards improved competitiveness. Competitive and Sustainable Growth is one of the four thematic programmes of the Fifth RTD Framework Programme (Research, Technological Development and Demonstration -1998-2002).
