Laser Induced Phenomena in Gas-Buffered Sodium cells

Interesting and unexpected behaviours were observed in the fluorescence signals of a Ar-buffered glass cell containing sodium vapour upon resonant laser excitation. Namely, the atomic sodium fluorescence signal shows a very fast decay after getting its peak value. A simple model for the observed phenomenon is proposed, taking into account a light-induced chemical shift from the Na to the Na2 in the atomic-dimer equilibrium reaction.
