| MOT is acronym for Magneto Optical Trap. A MOT consists of a cell containing
an atomic vapor in high vacuum. The vapor is illuminated by 3 perpendicular
pairs of red-detuned, circularly polarised laser beams. The atoms are cooled
by the beams and pushed in their crossing region (around the center
of the cell). In fact, quadrupole magnetic field produced by anti-Helmoltz
coils produces a Zero-Field in the center with a constant field gradient.
The field gradient makes that central position a stable equilibrium region
for atom motion. Temperatures as low as microKelvin have been achieves in
many laboratories using MOT's. |
