PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Location:
Certosa di Pontignano is a beautiful ancient monastery close to Siena. As most of the monasteries, the Certosa is secluded and located in a very quiet environment, the closest town being Siena, at about fifteen minutes distance by car. It is often location of small seminars and meetings and is used by the University of Siena as Guest House. The Certosa offers lodging facilities for up to 70 people inside the Monastery and 30-40 people can easily lodged in Hotels and Agriturismo located in the surroundings.
In the Certosa three lecture rooms are available for conferences and some other rooms for small meetings, panel discussions and poster exhibition. Poster exhibition can be held in the cloister as well. The building is also endowed with a large restaurant where all the participants can have their meals together as well as coffee breaks. Some other common rooms with chairs, television set and billiards are available for free time in the evening.

  Eligibility:
While scientists at any stage of their career may, in principle, apply to attend the ASI/NeMeTOC, the School is aimed specifically at postgraduate students and junior postdoctoral researchers. The number of places is limited to 80. Selection will be based criteria such as stage in research career, fitness of research area, need for financial support (see below), and the requirement to balance participating nationalities to satisfy NATO funding regulations.

Since lectures will be delivered in English, candidates must have an adequate knowledge of English. Also, if you are a PhD student, you will be asked to provide a letter of reference to be e-mailed to us at nemetoc@unifi.it.
The School is residential and all participants will be accommodated in Certosa di Pontignano and the close surroundings. Both lecturers and students are expected to arrive on Friday October 14 and to attend the School for its whole duration.

  Cost:
The full cost of attending the School is 650 € for academic or governmental participants and 950 € for industrial participants. This covers 9 nights of accommodation (14th to 23th October, day of departure), all meals (including conference banquet), lecture notes and a copy of the Proceedings when these are published.

  Financial support:
Partial or full financial support to cover the 600 € fee and/or travel may be offered to selected successful applicants. You are asked to indicate on the application form whether you need such support, and, if so, the amount you are applying for and the minimum amount that you will need to enable you to participate. Note that the last two amounts are not necessarily identical, and preference may be given to candidates requiring lesser support to participate. We do expect that about at least half of the participants will be fully self funded.
Students from Greece, Protugal and Turkey may be invited to contact their national NATO Science Fellowships administrator to check whether funds are available to support their participation in this ASI/NeMeTOC
American applicants may check their eligibility for one of a 5 possible bursaries which may be available.
